Our goal of this movement is to motivate immigrants and allies to join us in taking action to get the federal government to pass immigration reform. ¡Sí se puede!
After participating in “A Day Without Immigrants” on February 14, 2022, a group of immigrants in Denver, Colorado and the surrounding area stood up based on the belief that all of us have a responsibility to take action to create change even if it requires sacrifice. Omar Gómez, accompanied by a few friends, biked 1,866 miles from Denver, CO to Washington D.C. where he and other members of United for Immigration Reform (U4IR) launched a 5-day fast while lobbying Members of Congress. After a few weeks in Washington D.C., U4IR joined other immigrant activists in Los Angeles for the Summit of the Americas to ask leaders from across the Americas to come together to address immigration. Now, the group has its sights set on seeing legislation passed to update the immigration registry date to give over 8 million people in the U.S. the chance to obtain a permanent legal status.

“For many years politicians have made promises to the immigrant community but once elected they forget about us. I am tired of broken promises, at a personal level, these broken promises over decades long feel like a psychological torture. We come to this country to provide for our families and loved ones. I am leading this 40-day bike journey over 1800 miles across the country because I am fed up and tired of broken promises. I will bike all the way to DC and I will not leave without a clear commitment for immigration reform!”

“Immigration reform has been a campaign promise made to the immigrant community for decades, first under Obama who failed to deliver immigration reform and ended up deporting 3 million undocumented immigrants he promised to legalize and now under President Biden. After Biden’s first year in office, Democrats in Congress and in the White House continue to lose favorability within the immigrant community because of the ongoing broken promises on immigration reform and treatment of immigrants with racist policies such as Title 42 and mass detentions and deportations.”
